Mount St. Joseph University (Mount) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Steven Almquist as the new provost.
CINCINNATI, Oh. – With an impressive background in academia and administration, Dr. Almquist brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role at the University.
“I am beyond excited to serve as provost at Mount St. Joseph University,” said Dr. Almquist. “I am honored to join President Williams’s team and to contribute to the great things happening at the Mount. Mount St. Joseph University is a welcoming community with passionate and hard-working people, and I look forward to working with the faculty, staff, and students to ensure its ongoing success.”
Dr. Almquist previously held the position of professor of English and associate provost for arts and sciences at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. In that role, he oversaw five academic divisions and their respective chairs, ensuring quality programming, faculty support, and efficient divisional operations. He was instrumental in the development of a strategic academic plan and restructuring the organizational chart to enhance efficiency within the institution.

Over the past three academic years, Dr. Almquist has held multiple positions in the Provost's Office at Spring Hill College, where he has successfully managed various challenges, including Covid response policies, hurricane-related school closures, and structural changes within Academic Affairs. His experience in managing diverse responsibilities has prepared him well for his new role as provost.
Throughout his tenure at Spring Hill College, Dr. Almquist consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to the institution's mission and the well-being of its students. He joined the faculty in 2008 and quickly immersed himself in service opportunities within the college, actively engaging with student life and participating in student leadership programs.
In 2015, Dr. Almquist was appointed as faculty athletics representative, playing a pivotal role in Spring Hill College's transition from the NAIA to the NCAA (Division II). He contributed significantly to the development of compliance and oversight infrastructure required of NCAA institutions and worked on refining processes and policies for student-athletes.
Dr. Almquist's educational journey includes a B.A. in English from St. Mary's University of Minnesota. He pursued his passion for literature by earning graduate degrees in English from the University of North Dakota (M.A.) and the University of Iowa (M.A., Ph.D.).
As the new Provost of Mount St. Joseph University, Dr. Almquist is eager to contribute his extensive experience, leadership, and passion for academia to further enhance the University's commitment to excellence in education and student success.
