CINCINNATI — More than 70 couples gathered at Mater Dei Chapel at Mount St. Joseph University on Saturday to say "I do, again" at the University’s Centennial Wedding Vow Renewal Ceremony.
The University hosted the vow-renewal ceremony for alumni and couples who married at Mater Dei Chapel as part of its Centennial-year celebrations.
Couples participating in the event represented more than 1,750 years of marriage, ranging from one year to more than 50 years. Father Kevin Scalf presided over the ceremony.
The event was a first of its kind in the chapel most well-known for its brilliant stained glass and mosaics designed by Sr. Augusta Zimmer, the internationally renowned artist with the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. More than 1,200 couples have exchanged vows at the chapel since 1966, including Edward and Janet Castellini, who married in 1967 and participated in the ceremony to celebrate 53 years of marriage.
Sisters Laureen Ruberg, Marianne Bosch, and Lisa Stull and brothers Gary and Dennis Kallmayer made it a family affair by participating in the ceremony with their respective spouses.
Sister Karen Elliot, the University's director of mission integration, said couples expressed such gratitude for the opportunity to renew their vows in the chapel that she hopes to make the ceremony a biennial event.
“This ceremony connects our spiritual heritage to our current time and celebrates the sacred space of the Mater Dei Chapel,” Elliot said. “Providing the opportunity for couples to renew the faith that has strengthened them through ‘good times and bad and in sickness and in health’ gives us much to celebrate here at the University.”
