Meet Nicholas Jackson, A Chemistry Major Presented the Departmental Award for Research, Who Was Accepting into a Ph. D. Program for Materials Science.
Nicholas Jackson, a 2025 graduate of Mount St. Joseph University’s Chemistry program in Cincinnati Ohio, has been awarded the Departmental Award for Research and accepted into the Ph.D. program in Materials Science at the University of Cincinnati. His success reflects the Mount’s commitment to academic excellence, faculty-mentored research, and integrative learning experiences that prepare students for competitive graduate programs and careers in science.
Academic Excellence Rooted in Research
As part of his senior capstone requirement, Nicholas worked with Dr. Richard Hotz, Associate Professor of Chemistry, to investigate the monomer-dimer ratio in a zinc TRISOX complex, used in the hydrolysis of nitriles to amides. He presented his findings during the Senior Research Seminar, one of the Mount’s signature experiential learning opportunities that showcase student scholarship and communication.
“My favorite part was applying classroom concepts to real research problems,” Nicholas shares. “The process of trial and error made me a more persistent and thoughtful scientist.”
In recognition of his outstanding research contributions and academic distinction, Nicholas is one of four graduating seniors who have received a 2025 Research Award from the Department of Biomedical and Natural Sciences, which will be noted in the university’s official Commencement Program.

Leadership On and Off the Field
Nicholas also exemplifies what it means to be a Division III student-athlete. As the starting goalkeeper on the MSJ men’s lacrosse team, he competed in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) while balancing rigorous coursework and lab responsibilities.
“Being a student-athlete taught me discipline and time management—skills that translate directly to research and academics.”

Bridging Classroom and Career Through Applied Learning
Beyond academics and athletics, Nicholas gained hands-on experience through three semesters working in the MSJ Chemistry stockroom, where he supported lab preparation and chemical inventory. In May 2024, he began a co-op at Glass Coatings & Concepts in Cincinnati, where he continues to work as a laboratory technician. These experiences reflect MSJ’s emphasis on experiential learning that prepares students to transition confidently into graduate school or the workforce.
